Kile Takes Track Title at Ocean to Cap Off Successful 2018

After 4 year absence from full-time racing, San Jose native Matt Kile returned with a vengeance in 2018. The last time Kile had attempted a full season of racing was back in 2013 with an IMCA Sport Mod, and had since raced sporadically at various tracks across the state.

 

Though he hadn’t raced much in recent years, Kile returned to Ocean Speedway with high expectations, with his main goal being winning the track’s American Stock championship. Early in the season, you could see Kile was going to be a contender.

 

Kile would pick up his first win just 3 races into the season. Kile continued to win once every 3 weeks until he picked up his 4th win 11 races in to break the streak. Kile’s 5th and final win would come at one of the biggest races of the year, at the Johnny Key Classic in late August. Even when he wasn’t winning, Kile was impressively consistent, only finishing outside the Top 5 once all season. Kile’s 20 for 21 Top 5 rate would easily be the highest at the speedway in 2018.

 

Kile’s biggest challenge for the title would be 2 time defending champ Robert Gallaher. The two drivers stayed neck and neck for the championship for majority of the season, often only separated by only 10 points or less. While Kile began to pull away in the later months, Gallaher was forced to bow out of the title hunt with a few weeks left, all but ensuring Kile the track title.

 

When asked about his highly successful season, Matt said “In my first full year back, my intention all along was to win the track championship, and I’m very proud of my crew and myself for being able to run with the best drivers and equipment out there and come out on top.”

Cooper Brothers Kick Off 2019 Successfully

After a shorter than usual offseason, Brian Cooper and the AutoMaxx Racing team headed down to the Stockton Dirt Track to get in some early racing. The team originally didn’t plan to run, but Brian’s brother Todd, who had raced once since 2017, was presented an opportunity by fellow racer David Pierce to drive his new car at the event, so Brian got his car ready to race as well.

Brian started on the front row of his heat, proceeding to take the lead at the drop of the green flag and never looking back, claiming the easy heat race win. Todd on the other hand had to start last in his heat. Since he was still getting adjusted to his new ride, Todd was only able to move up one spot to finish 4th.

Unfortunately for Brian, the redraw did him no favors as he had to start 10th in the feature. With Todd also starting 16th, both brother’s had plenty of work to do if they wanted a solid finish. Brian quickly went to work once the race began, moving into the Top 5 within the first 5 laps, where he settled into battles with the likes of Jason Nation and Tommy Fraser over the spot. Meanwhile, Todd was steadily moving forward, moving up to 10th by the halfway point in the race.

As the laps began to wind down, cautions began flying left and right, which helped Todd move further and further up the running order. Then, as the race went under yellow with 5 to go, Brian, who was running 5th at the time, had to pull off with a right front flat that would ultimately end his night. Over the final 5 laps, Todd was able to move from 8th up to 4th to take home a Top 5 in his return to dirt racing.

Todd was happy with his performance Saturday night, saying “It started out with a bad pill draw. Finished 4th in the heat, so that put us starting 16th in the main. Car was good. Was able to make it up to a 4th place finish. This all wouldn’t be possible without David Pierce asking me to wheel his badass hot rod. We had a blast racing together and am hoping to team up some more in the future.”

Brian remained positive despite the result, saying “Night started out with a good pill draw which had us starting P2 in heat 1 and checked out for the heat race win. Then drew the 10 for the redraw. Was up to 5th at one point and started having some carburetor issues with it loading up in the corners. Eventually got a right front flat ending our night. Was really happy with the car after we made wholesale changes in the front end. I want to thank all my sponsors, crew and my wife for allowing me to do what I do”

Hughes Caps Off Career Season With Merced Track Title

While Darrell Hughes has spent the past few seasons proving to be a serious contender wherever he raced, the Manteca native took it to a whole new level in 2018. The 3rd generation talent stayed closer to home this past season, dominating most of the season at Merced Speedway en route to his first track title.

 

To say Hughes had the competition covered all season at his home track may be an understatement. Aside from one DNF early in the season, Hughes never finished outside the Top 5 at Merced all season. Hughes made his big push to take the track championship late in the season, winning five of the last seven races, including both the Timmy Post Memorial and the Tribute to Ed Parker, to amass an insurmountable point lead over the last 2 months of the season.

 

Though it wasn’t as successful of a trip as the team would have liked, Hughes credits the long haul to Arizona for the Arizona Modified Tour in Mid-February as big reason for the team’s jump in performance. The differences showed the few times Hughes travelled in 2018. Hughes excelled at one track in particular in his 2018 travels, Southern Oregon Speedway. After a Top 5 run at the track’s speedweek race in late June, Hughes returned in September for the 2nd annual R Charles Snyder Salute. The team looked like a contender all weekend, eventually falling just short to Bobby Hogge IV and earning a nice $2,500 payday for his effort.

 

Like many modified drivers in the region, Hughes capped off his season at the annual Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas. This year’s Duel was Hughes’s finest showing yet. Hughes made the preliminary features on both of the first 2 nights, highlighted by a heat race win and Top 10 on night 1. On the final day, Hughes would have to win his LCQ to make the big show, but would ultimately miss the transfer by just two spots, ending his weekend and season.

 

When asked about 2018 and his plans for 2019, Darrell said: “Hopefully we can get some help with tires and fuel so we can make it to the Arizona mod tour next month. I think a lot of our success in 2018 can be accredited to some stuff that we learned last February at Cocopah speedway.”

Late Success has Drager Looking Forward to 2019

Though 2018 was an up and down season for Matthew Drager, the Albany based team showed substantial progress in the last few months of the season that has given Drager plenty of optimism heading into 2019.

 

The first couple of months were rough for Drager and his team. They battled a myriad of mechanical issues that limited the amount of races that Drager was able to run, even leading to Drager racing for multiple other car owners across the May and June months.

 

In late July Drager was back into his own car after replacing the rear clip on his chassis, and the change in performance was blatantly obvious. The first night back in his new car, Drager towed up to Gray’s Harbor Speedway. It looked like Drager was well on his way to a victory before late contact with a lapped car ended his chances at the win.

 

The following week Drager would return for the Shipwreck Beads Modified Nationals, with this race truly being a sign of things to come. Drager took home a 3rd place finish in the main event, kicking off a 5 week stretch where Drager would finish in the Top 3 at 3 big shows (Shipwreck Beads Mod Nationals, Logger’s Cup at Cottage Grove, and Willamette’s Modified Nationals).

 

Drager followed those up with another strong showing at one of the state’s biggest modified races, the $5,000 to win R Charles Snyder Salute, running in the Top 10 early before fading late in the 50 lap feature. This didn’t faze Drager, as the team’s momentum carried into the final two points races at Willamette Speedway, taking finishes of 2nd and 3rd over the last two weeks. Drager’s season would end at the annual Duel in the Desert, where he had a nice showing, making one preliminary main, but just missing transferring into the big show by three spots on the final day.

 

When asked about his thoughts on 2018, Drager said “2018 was a challenging year but has us motivated for a strong 2019. It was rough in the fact that we got so tore up early and missed half of the year but when we got back in our equipment we had some really good runs and I’m optimistic for what the next year holds.”

Brown Wraps up Action Packed 2018

With the 2018 season finished, 3rd generation Sport Mod racer Keith Brown Jr continued his outlaw style schedule, racing at 14 different tracks across his 23 starts on the year. The Pittsburg native travelled to 4 different states in 2018, collecting Top 5’s in 3 of the 4 states, while winning in both California and Oregon.

 

Brown’s two wins came over the span of 3 days in late June while following the Wild West Modified Shootout, picking up victories at both Yreka’s Siskiyou Motor Speedway and Coos Bay Speedway. The race at Yreka was a particularly exciting one, as he battled with local driver Matt Sanders for the entirety of the 20 lap feature, eventually holding off Sanders in a drag race to the finish line.

 

The Coos Bay event was interesting to say the least, as the 3 Sport Mods who made the trip up were combined with the local Sportsman Late Model class for the night. From the drop of the green flag in the heat race it quickly became apparent that Brown was easily the class of the field. Brown would lead every lap of his heat race, trophy dash, and main event for a clean sweep of the evening.

 

For Brown, the majority of his success in 2018 came when he travelled North, as all of his Top 5’s came North of the California state capitol. That isn’t saying the Brown didn’t do well running down South, however, as he picked up multiple Top 10’s at the two Bakersfield area tracks against some of the toughest local racers in the state.

 

In addition to racing all across the West Coast, Brown also made successful appearances at the two biggest Sport Mod races in the country: the IMCA Supernationals in Boone, Iowa, and the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas. Though night one at the Supernationals was rough for Brown, he rebounded on the 2nd night with a heat race win that automatically locked him into the night’s preliminary main, with a chance to lock into the big show. Brown was running up front before a driver spun in front of him, causing him to make contact and lead to a black flag for questionable driving. The last chance qualifiers would be rained out on the final night to end Brown’s chances of making the race.

 

The Duel in the Desert was a much more successful trip for Brown. Despite having to transfer from the B Main, Brown would take home a solid 15th on the opening night. Just like Boone, Brown would win his heat race on Night 2. Brown was running in the Top 10 before he was spun from behind. Brown would spend the rest of the race charging from 30th to again finish 15th. Since he was unable to lock himself in the feature the first two nights, Brown would be forced to run a last chance qualifier to have one last shot at making the Duel. Unfortunately Brown’s weekend would come to an end early in the LCQ after contact with another driver. Brown had been running 3rd, just one spot out of the final transfer spot.

 

When asked about his opinion on the 2018 season, Brown said: “In 2018 we did a lot of testing ending the year with a really fast racecar, looking forward to a very successful 2019.”

Curran Just Misses Ringing in New Year With a Win

After a highly successful rookie season in the Sport Mod class for Brent Curran, the Antioch native looks to build off an already impressive list of accomplishments heading into the 2019 season.

 

Curran and team would kick off the 2019 season on New Year’s Day at the Stockton Dirt Track, as some of the top drivers from across the state flocked to the 4/10ths mile oval to ring in the new year. A nice pill draw would set Curran up with a front row starting spot, and as soon as the green flag waved, he was gone. 2nd and 3rd place did all they could to reel Curran back in over the 8 lap heat race, but weren’t able to make any inroads, leading to an easy heat race win for Curran.

 

Curran’s pill draw luck would continue into the redraw, as Brent drew the pole position for the main event. From the drop of the green it again looked to be Brent’s race to lose. Despite a multitude of early cautions, Brent would pull away on each ensuing restart. Once the race finally settled down, Curran settled into a groove, setting the quickest lap of the race while holding a steady advantage over 2nd place runner Jason Nation.

 

As Curran closed in on lapped traffic, Nation slowly began closing in. Though Nation was starting to reel him in, Curran looked like he had a big enough advantage to hold on for the win, but that would all change in the last few laps. With just 2 laps to go, Curran caught up to the back of 2 lapped cars racing side by side. This slowed Curran enough for Nation to pull up to Curran’s bumper as they took the white flag. The two cars running side by side finally ran single file but Curran was left nowhere to go as Nation had pulled to his outside heading into turns 1 and 2. The two raced side by side as they headed down the backstretch, but Curran was still stuck behind lapped traffic, giving Nation the space needed to make a last lap pass for the win and forcing Curran to settle for 2nd in a race that he easily had the speed to win.

 

A disappointed Curran had this to say after the race: “Bitter sweet night tonight for the first race of 2019. Day started of great taking the win in the heat race. Started pole and lead the whole main till the last lap and got boxed in by a lap car. Ended up p2. I could sit here all night and think of plenty of excuses or scenarios that could’ve changed the way things turned out but bottom line is it’s racing and sometimes the cards don’t play out. Either way good start to the 2019 season and even better to spend the day with family and friends. Can’t thank the team enough for giving me a bad fast car and my sponsors for making everything possible. On to the next one.”

Sieweke Looks to Carry Late Season Momentum Into 2019

Despite a short season in 2018, Santa Rosa wheelman Chris Sieweke heads into 2019 with plenty of reasons for optimism. The veteran driver enjoyed a breakout performance over the last 3 months of the season, picking up 3 wins in his last 7 starts.

Looking at Sieweke’s season from a statistical perspective doesn’t do justice to just how consistent Sieweke was during 2018. While it’s true that Sieweke finished outside the Top 5 8 times across his 14 starts this year, the numbers won’t tell you that 6 of those races he didn’t finish due to either an incident, or a mechanical failure.

Most will say that a 14th place finish isn’t something to be proud of, but just making the Pat and Jim Pettit Memorial feature was a huge accomplishment for Sieweke. Sieweke was able to hold his own against 50 of the West Coast’s best Modified drivers all weekend long, an impressive feat for just about anyone.

The biggest story for Sieweke would easily be his late season success. Chris took home 3 wins at 3 separate race tracks from August to October. While the wins at Petaluma and Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway were certainly impressive, his biggest win of the season would be the Fall Brawl at Antioch Speedway. Against a full field of stout Sport Mods, Sieweke pulled off the unexpected win, easily one of the biggest of his career.

Even though he runs on a shoestring budget and doesn’t have any sponsors besides his father Mike Karinen, Sieweke managed to put together the best season of his career, and has given people plenty to talk about as we get closer to the 2019 race season. While it remains to be seen if he’ll be able to repeat this performance next year, there’s no doubt that he has firmly entrenched himself as a contender each and every night out.

Schroeder Wraps Up Superb 2018

2018 was a another great year for Montevideo, Minnesota’s Rick Schroeder. The 18 year veteran put together an outstandingly consistent season, only finishing outside the Top 5 three times in his 22 starts. It’s even more impressive when you realize it took 11 starts before Schroeder slumped to a 7th place finish.

 

Instead of starting a run of poor finishes, that 7th place finish ignited a light in Schroeder. Rick would go on to claim wins in 2 of the first 3 weeks of July at Fergus Falls’ I-94 Speedway and Alexandria’s Viking Speedway. Those 2 victories would go in the books as career wins numbers 11 and 12.

 

Schroeder looked to be a contender early in the year at Viking, taking 3 runner up spots in the first 4 races. Despite finishing in the Top 4 in all but 2 races, points leader Ben Wolden was able to pull away late in the season. Schroeder would have had a better chance at running down Wolden if multiple races weren’t rained out towards the end of the season, which lead to Schroeder’s decision to forgo the final points race of the year, choosing instead to race a couple more tracks before the season ended.

 

One of the stats that stood out for Schroeder in 2018 showcased just how consistently he ran up front. In 22 starts, Schroeder finished on the podium (Top 3) 11 times. Schroeder was in contention for wins time and time again throughout the year, so it was no surprise to see him run competitively at every track he visited. If Schroeder runs at or near this level again in 2019, there’s no doubt that he’ll be in victory lane again a few times next year.

 

While he still plans on running the Limited Late Model again next season, Schroeder made a big move this offseason to acquire a Sprint Car, something he had hoped to do before he quit racing. When asked of his opinion on how 2018 went, Rick said: “I think my team and I had a pretty good 2018 race season. I am proud of the fact that we only finished outside the top 5 three times all year and only had one DNF. We are looking forward to see what 2019 brings with continuing to run the late model but also getting our feet wet with the sprint car!”

Garner Claims First Antioch Track Title

Following in the footsteps of his father, the Maverick Jerry Garner, 3rd generation driver Mark Garner took home his first track championship at his home track, Antioch Speedway. The Antioch native has been outspoken in recent years about his goal to win the track title in memory of his father.

 

Garner went all in on 2018, even selling his Sport Mod to put all the team’s focus on winning the Limited Late Model championship. For the 2nd consecutive season, Garner kicked off the year by winning the 2nd annual Larry Damitz Memorial. Garner’s win ensured that he is still the only winner in the history of the race. Though it would be 2 months before Garner picked up his 2nd win of the season, he stayed consistent, only finishing outside of the Top 5 once before his 2nd win in late June.

 

After Garner followed his 2nd win of the season with another 6th place finish, Garner went on a tear of consistency over the last 11 races, finishing no worse than 5th. Despite Garner’s stretch of great runs, the title picture was still up in the air. Garner, Kimo Oreta and Mike Walko were all still in the hunt as the season shifted into August.

 

As the season wound down, Walko fell out of contention, leaving Oreta and Garner to battle for the division crown. It wasn’t looking good for Garner going into the final 3 races, but Garner pulled off a miracle, taking 2 wins and 1 2nd place finish over the last 3 events to claim the championship. The title was made even more special by the fact that many of Garner’s family members were in attendance to witness the emotional victory. When asked about 2018, Garner said: “How my season went was like this: We won the Larry Damitz for the 2nd time we won both of them last year and this year. We were always in the hunt just had some bad nights like everyone has. We overcame it and keep pushing through the season.

Cooper Takes Chico Title After Dominant Season

Despite a laid back schedule this year, Yuba City’s Brian Cooper showed that he hadn’t lost a step after a nearly perfect season. When you look at Cooper’s stats this year, one big thing stands out. In the 20 races he ran this year, Cooper only finished worse than 3rd three times, all of which were races he didn’t complete due to an incident.

 

Cooper’s biggest accomplishment in 2018 had to be his domination at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway on his way to the Sport Mod track championship. Cooper collected 4 wins at the track, as well as 11 finishes of 3rd or better in 12 starts. Cooper firmly entrenched himself as the favorite early, with unmatchable consistency giving him a commanding points lead by early June. From there, Cooper didn’t let off the gas pedal, winning 3 of the last 6 races to clinch the track title. The title was his first at the famous Northern California track, while he has also won 1 track title at Placerville Speedway, and 3 at Marysville Raceway.

 

Though Cooper didn’t race nearly as much in 2018, he still continued to travel across the state and even into Oregon. Cooper’s lone trip to Oregon was the Roger Haudenschild Memorial at Southern Oregon Speedway in June. Cooper looked to have another Top 5 run in the bag, but a mid race wreck destroyed the radiator and ended his night. By far the biggest race Cooper attended this season was the annual Pat and Jim Pettit Shootout at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway. After winning his heat race on Night One, Cooper was running 2nd in the main when he caught a rut in turn 2, almost flipping the car. Then on a restart with 6 to go, Cooper lost a transmission. Ending his great run. Night Two, Cooper would again win his heat race. An unfortunate redraw meant that Cooper would be starting deep in the field. Over the course of the race, Cooper scratched and clawed his way forward to claim 3rd out of the 40 plus Sport Mods that showed up to race.

 

Next season, Cooper plans to run more of a “Bounty Hunter” schedule, trying to make most if not all of the big Sport Mod races on the West Coast, as opposed to running for points. Brian had this to say on a very successful 2018: “The 2018 season went well for us. Didn’t race as many big shows as we would’ve liked to but had some great runs with the new Victory Circle Chassis. Im very happy with the car.  Now that I’ve got my Silver Dollar Speedway Championship no more points racing for me. I really enjoy the sport mod class and for the most part there’s a lot of good guys to race with. Hoping to have some fun and do some traveling with them next year.”

Yaeger Shows Consistent Growth in 2nd Season Despite Constant Mechanical Gremlins

Though it may have been a rough season overall, San Francisco’s Justin Yaeger showed flashes of potential numerous times throughout. 2018 was Yaeger’s first full season racing, following in the footsteps of his father, successful driver Tim Yaeger Jr.

 

While starting his career in the high powered IMCA Modifieds, Yaeger has began to adjust quickly. Multiple times throughout the season, Yaeger ran in or near the Top 5, just for a mechanical failure to beset a quality run, so Yaeger’s finishes aren’t completely indicative of his performance in 2018. In the final points race of the season at Petaluma, Yaeger battled throttle issues that limited him to ¼ throttle power, but finished the race to gain as many points as possible. Even with those issues, Yaeger was still able to take home 3rd in the Petaluma Speedway points standings.

 

Part of the learning curve in racing is testing yourself against top competition. Yaeger did this multiple times during the year, including the prestigious Pat Pettit Shootout at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway, as well as a 2 day All Star Modified Tour event at the illustrious Calistoga Half Mile. The trip to Calistoga was Yaeger’s first time racing on high speed half mile track, and though he ran well for his first time there, he missed the main event both nights against some of the state’s top talent. Yaeger’s performance at the Pettit looked to be going much better on the first night, before a broken differential ended his night. The 2nd night, Yaeger’s hopes of making the biggest modified race came down to a 12 lap B Main. Yaeger was running well and close to a transfer position, but unfortunately he would pull off late, ending his weekend.

 

If Yaeger is able to build off the flashes we saw in 2018, there’s no doubt that he could be contending for wins next season. When asked about his first full season, Yaeger said “I was happy to be successful even fighting through the amount of bad luck that came my way, and learned enough to go into next season with complete confidence.”

Hectic 2018 Concludes for Jimmy Ford

2018 was another successful for veteran Sport Mod driver Jimmy Ford. The Yuba City native picked up 4 wins in his travels, winning races as far north as Lebanon, Oregon’s Willamette Speedway, and as far south as Marysville Raceway. Ford also collected victories at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway and Yreka’s Siskiyou Motor Speedway along the way.

 

Ford’s travels across the Northern half of California rewarded him in a big way in the IMCA state standings as well, with his 22 starts in the state earning him a strong placing of 5th. Of all the tracks he raced at, Marysville Raceway easily had to be his best, only placing outside the Top 3 once in 7 starts, which also included a win and two runner up finishes.

 

In the midst of 2018, Ford made a couple of stops at tracks that had not raced the division before this season. Ford made appearances at the inaugural Sport Mod races at both Orland Raceway and Fernley 95a Speedway in Nevada. Fans in Orland were treated to a fierce battle between Ford and Olivehurst gasser Phillip Shelby for the entirety of the race, with Ford falling just short in the end. Ford would also finish 2nd at the first ever Sport Mod race at Fernley.

 

Ford would make appearances at 2 of the most prestigious Sport Mod races on the West Coast in 2018, the R Charles Snyder Memorial in Medford, Oregon, and the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas. The trip north to Southern Oregon Speedway proved to be an immensely successful one for Ford. Piloting Marty Burdine’s number 79, Ford drove up to a 2nd place finish on night 1, then followed that with a B Main win and a charge through the field to claim 6th in the Main Event. After a couple of okay nights at the Duel in the Desert, Ford went into the final night with one final chance to make the big show. After starting 8th in his last chance qualifier, Ford drove through the field and into a transfer spot. But with 3 laps to go, tragedy struck, as Ford’s car broke a rear gear, ending Ford’s weekend.

 

After a busy 2018, Ford has big plans for 2019, saying “We plan on running races in Oregon, Nevada, California of course, Arizona and if I can get some sponsorship the Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa.” Ford had this to say on 2018 as a whole: “The year was amazing, we raced in three states won in two of them and a second in the other. How many drivers can say I won 4 races at 4 different tracks and 2 states?”

Constant Mechanical Bugs Keep Swank From Title Contention

With numbers like 7 wins and 17 Top 5’s, most would expect to be in the hunt for a championship, if not a champion. This was not the case for Cameron Swank. The Swank team battled mechanical gremlins all season that would take Cameron out of contention for the Antioch Speedway Hobby Stock Championship.

 

Most nights that Swank was able to bring his car out to the track in 2018, he had a Top 3 car, evidenced by his 15 podium finishes on the season. The year started out extremely strong for Swank, finishing 1st or 2nd in 5 of the first 7 races, with a 3rd and 1 DNF to go along with those. It was looking like Swank was emerging as a candidate to repeat as track champ before he missed a race early in the year, allowing his brother Morgan to pilot the car.

 

Swank then went on another tear from late May to early July, taking 4 wins in a 7 week stretch. Along the way Swank picked up a win in the Fair Race Trophy Dash, which has become one of his favorite plaques. Swank wasn’t done there. The month of August would bring one of the most dominant months the speedway has seen in recent times, as Swank won 3 of the 4 races held in the month. The only race he didn’t win in August would see Swank take 5th, giving him plenty of momentum heading into the big $1,000 to win 50 lap money run on September 8th.

 

The big money and open rules brought some of the fastest Hobby Stocks from across the state, but Swank was able to hold his own, claiming 3rd out of 25 cars. Swank would only make 2 more starts after the big show, taking home 2 more Top 5’s before his season ended. In the hobby stock that is. In the season finale, Swank brought out his new B Mod. Unfortunately for Swank, the night didn’t go well at all. After starting in the rear to let points chasers race each other and stay out of their way, he had to pull off early after losing his brakes. Swank will have a whole offseason to get the new car dialed in to hopefully run up front like he has the past few seasons.

 

Swank had this to say about 2018: “2018 was a breakout season for me in the hobby stock division. It was a year when you had to bring your A game every week to run with an entire field of fast cars . Special thanks to my mom and my crew chief mike costa for your endless support.”

Travis Petersen Racing Claims 2018 Nevada Pro Stock Association Title

After a season long battle, the Travis Petersen Racing entry primarily piloted by Reno, Nevada hotshoe Jay Sears has claimed the prestigious Nevada Pro Stock Association title. All year long, the Petersen Racing ride and IMCA Modified star Robert Miller were locked in a heated competition to bring home the series crown. In the end, the team’s unmatched consistency and win total earned them the championship.

 

The year began with another one of Nevada’s most recognizable racers, Cory Sample, behind the wheel for the first race at Rattlesnake Raceway. Sample unsurprisingly had the car up front all night, just falling short in a spirited battle with Bill Pearson. From there, it was on to a 2 day weekend at Lovelock and Winnemucca, with Sears returning to the driver’s seat. The team struggled the first night despite having a fast car, finishing 9th after pulling off with 6 to go.

 

Night 2 would shift their attention to the Winnemucca Regional Raceway for their only trip to the track in 2018, and it could not have gone any better. The car was fast from the moment the team unloaded, dominating both the heat race and feature to claim the team’s first victory of the season. After a strong 3rd place run at Quincy, it was time for arguably the biggest race of the tour’s season, the Gordon Russell Sr Memorial race at Cedarville. Like the race at Winnemucca, Sears was able to sweep both the heat race and main event, but this time, Sears faced serious competition in the form Jeff Olschowska. Fortunately, Sears was able to hold off Olschowska’s challenges to claim the big victory.

 

The team would follow up their victory with 2 consecutive 2nd place finishes, the first with Richard Papenhausen piloting the car at American Valley Speedway in Quincy, followed by Sears returning the seat with another runner up finish at the first annual Al Miller Memorial at Lovelock. The next 3 weeks would help clinch the series title, as Sears was able to bookend a 4th place finish at Rattlesnake with two big wins at Fernley 95a Speedway. The strong stretch of finishes gave the Petersen Racing entry a commanding advantage going into the season finale, which turned into an insurmountable lead when the Travis White Racing entry didn’t show up to final race of the season, handing the Petersen team the series title.

 

When asked about 2018, team owner Travis Petersen had this to say: “As the 2018 comes to an end I couldn’t be more proud of our year! 4 wins & 2018 NPSA Champions!!! Teamwork makes the Dreamwork and that’s what TPR is all about. Season full of making great memories and watching Jay Sears and the team put on some amazing shows! Thank you to all that allow us to Live this Dream!! We are truly blessed! Looking forward to 2019!” The fact that the points battle was still as close as it was with the team’s dominance just further testifies to the war that Sears and Miller went through in pursuit of the series championship. If the team performs even close to this level in 2019, you may just see them repeat as champs. At this point, they have to be the heavy favorites going into next season.

Mid-Season Shift Brings Success to Kaos Racing

(11/15/2018)

After a rough first half to 2018, the Northern California based Kaos Racing team decided to switch their Placerville Pure Stock program over to compete at Marysville Raceway in the Hobby Stock division. The change went far better than their expectations for the Van Roekel brothers, with both claiming their first Top 5’s of the year.

 

For Mike Stoeckle, 2018 was a year he’s hoping to put behind him. Despite Stoeckle fighting mechanical issues all season, he was able to claim 5 Top 10’s, including 3 against the Placerville Pure Stocks, a division that often reaches 15-20 cars a night. With the team shifting to Marysville, Stoeckle was forced to build a new car that met the track’s stricter rule set. Unfortunately for Stoeckle, the new car had issues every night out. The car finally began to show promise at the season ending Taxi Cab Open, but again, mechanical issues forced Stoeckle to retire from the race early. When asked about his thoughts on 2018, Stoeckle said: “We built a new car mid season to appease the rules for Marysville, the car fought with us the rest of the season from broken axles to broken distributors, and scattered differentials. The last night out we got it to handle well and until the distributor gave us fits it was working really well.”

 

Chris Van Roekel on the other hand, experienced a much improved season in 2018. Like Stoeckle, Chris Van Roekel was able to collect 3 Top 10’s in his 7 Placerville starts. Though Chris was running with an underpowered 283 motor, he knocked on the door of the Top 5 multiple times, highlighted by a 6th place run in his 2nd race of the season. After the July 4th, the team switched their attention to running Marysville, and the change brought some much needed success. The first 2 races didn’t go to plan, including a 2nd place DQ after being short on vacuum by half an inch. After the Dq, Chris came back the next race and showed that the previous race wasn’t a fluke, running 2nd yet again, this time passing tech. The next race he’d follow with another Top 10 claiming 8th. Though the year could have definitely went better, Chris remained positive when asked about 2018: “For changing seasons mid season we did exceptionally well, my little 283 hung with the best of them. Most enjoyable season I have had in a long time. Despite the breakdowns and weird stuff we had break we did really well!”

 

Jesse Van Roekel easily had the best season of the 3 car Van Roekel stable. In 10 races, Jesse only finished outside the Top 10 twice, including only once at Placerville in 5 tries against some of the toughest competition in the state. Though his season was already going pretty well, the mid season move to Marysville brought immediate success to Jesse Van Roekel. In his first race at the track, Jesse came up just short in the pursuit of his first career win, settling for a career best 2nd. The next few races didn’t go nearly as well, as he took 7th twice and had 1 DNF going into the last race of the season, the Taxi Cab Open. Though the car didn’t look very good in the heat race at all, things turned around in a big way in the main event.  In the 15 car main event, Jesse Van Roekel was able to work his way through the big field to take 4th.

Peckham Wraps up Stellar 2018 Campaign

As a whole, 2018 was a season that Grass Valley’s Andrew Peckham will never forget. The SportMod driver had an incredible number of wins and Top 5’s, along the way to a runner up spot in the IMCA SportMod State Standings.

 

Peckham’s accomplishments are all the more impressive when you take into consideration that 2018 was Peckham’s first full season behind the wheel. 5 wins, and 20 Top 5’s are stellar numbers when you also take into account the amount of travelling Peckham did this season.

 

Peckham made multiple trips as far North as Chico, and as far South as Merced. Finding success at every track he travelled to in California, he claimed at least 1 Top 5 at every track he travelled to in the state. Peckham and crew found the majority of his success up North, claiming 2 wins apiece at both Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway and Marysville Raceway. Despite missing a race at Chico, Peckham still took home 3rd in the standings. Had he made every race, he would have been in the hunt for the track championship.

 

Along with all the travelling he did in state, Peckham also made two trips out of state this season to compete in the 2 biggest SportMod races on the West Coast. On Labor Day weekend, the team headed up to Oregon for Southern Oregon Speedway’s 2nd annual R Charles Snyder Salute. The trip didn’t go nearly as well as they hoped, missing the qualifier main Saturday night, the missing the final transfer into the big show by 1 spot Sunday.

 

Then in early November, Peckham headed down to Las Vegas for the most prestigious Modified race in the west, the Duel in the Desert. This trip went much better. After starting 10th in his heat on the opening night, he scratched and clawed his way all the way up to 2nd to make the first qualifier. The 2nd night didn’t go nearly as well, as he missed the qualifier. That left Peckham one last chance to make the big show. In his last chance qualifier, he was able to finish in the Top 3 to make it to the Main Event. Peckham then rolled off 22nd in the feature. Over the course of the race, Peckham was able to make a few passes and stay out of trouble to claim 15th out of almost 100 SportMods at the event.

 

Peckham had this to say on his 2018 performance: “For being back in it full time for this first year if I can repeat what I’ve done I think you’ve done pretty good.” With this strong of a first season in a SportMod, it’s safe to say that Peckham is primed for another successful year in 2019.

Coffman’s 2nd Year on Dirt Sees Vast Improvement

After an up and down rookie season in 2017, Roseburg, Oregon’s Doug Coffman showed impressive improvement this year. Considering Coffman primarily raced at Cottage Grove Speedway this season, a track that averages almost 20 cars a night, having only 2 finishes outside the Top 10 seems like a big success for the 2nd year SportMod driver.

 

The biggest moment for Coffman this season easily had to be claiming his 1st career win in his last start of the season, late in September at Southern Oregon Speedway. Coffman had won his heat race earlier in the night, then set sail in the main event, beating two of Medford’s best in Rich McCoy and Justin McCreadie to seal the deal. Though he only made limited starts at the track in 2018, it appeared to be one of his most successful. Besides the season ending win, Coffman was also in the running for the win at the Speedweek race in June, before ultimately settling for third behind McCreadie and Brent Curran.

 

While his first career win was a big deal, almost equally as impressive was his 3rd place run in the Cottage Grove Speedway track points. To be able to say that you were the third best car out of a consistent 15-20 car field in only your second year, is a pretty significant accomplishment. While Coffman wasn’t able to win at his home track, his outstanding consistency kept him in the hunt for the track title for the majority of the year.

 

One more accomplishment to note was the fact that Coffman came home 4th in Oregon IMCA SportMod State Points. Had he been able to make a few more of the Willamette or Medford races, Coffman may have been in the running for a spot in the Top 3.

 

When asked about his thoughts on the 2018 season, Coffman said “A season full of many ups and downs that I will never forget #SENDINGITFORCINDY”  With the improvement we all saw out of Doug Coffman in 2018, there’s no doubt in my mind that he will be up front contending for wins far more often in 2019. Look for Coffman to make a run at both the Cottage Grove track title and the Oregon state championship.

Impressive 2018 season wraps up for Sayre

2018 was a career year for Chico native Michael Sayre. The big story in the offseason for Sayre’s racing program was the switch from a division on the brink of extinction, the Economy Sprints, to a new, more cost effective Crate Sprint Car class. The aim of the division change was to provide closer racing at a lower cost, allowing some who had never had the money to race a sprint car the opportunity to do so.

 

For Sayre, the division change couldn’t have gone better. Throughout the 2018 season, Sayre showed incredible consistency. Sayre did not finish out of the Top 5 despite most nights having 8 or 9 cars, including 2 runner up finishes in the first four races, and 4 third place finishes over the 9 race slate. Sayre also collected two Heat Race wins late in the season.  

 

As the season went on, Sayre found himself in a fierce battle with Cameron Haney Sr. for the track championship. Haney, like Sayre himself, is one of the biggest proponents of expansion for the division, even making multiple trips to Nevada in an attempt to get the division going in the state.

 

Going into the final points race, Sayre, Haney, and Jaylon Deas all went into the night with a mathematical chance to take home the crown. Unfortunately for Sayre, it was one of his very few off nights this season, taking home 4th, while Haney won the race, and the championship.  

 

Asked about the 2018 season, Sayre had this to say: “This was my third year in a Sprint car and I made huge improvement in my driving. Finally found the ” feel I’ve been looking for.” Big shout out to my good friends and fellow racers R.C. Smith and Brandon Powell. They coached me and dialed the car in for me so I was comfortable.”

Historic 2018 Comes to a Close for Sorensen

8 Main event wins, 24 Top 5’s, 14 heat race wins. These are numbers that many drivers won’t reach in the entirety of their career, but El Sobrante’s Chris Sorensen accomplished this all in one season at Antioch Speedway.

2018 was a career year for the veteran driver, and one he knows he may never be able to recreate. Sorensen came out firing early and often in 2018, amassing an over 100 point lead over 2nd place heading into the month of June, asserting that he’d be the man to beat for the Antioch Speedway Hobby Stock Championship.

As the season wore on, Sorensen continued his stranglehold over the division, racking up 6 wins and a 200 point lead heading into the month of August. August, however, would be the lone month of the season he wouldn’t win, but even when he wasn’t winning, his incredible consistency continued to carry him towards the title. In fact, in 27 starts this season, Sorensen’s worst finish of the year was 6th. 6th! In a division that averaged around 12 cars a night, including the 25 car open rules race, Sorensen still found a way to run up front week in and week out.

 

Sorensen’s consistency would be unmatched all season, with the final points tally seeing him win the Championship by over 350 points. If Sorensen returns next season to defend his Hobby Stock title, his fellow competitors will have to step up in a big way to keep Sorensen from repeating as Champion.

Curran Scores Biggest Win of Young Career at Pettit Shootout

(10/1/18)

 

After last week’s shakedown at Merced, rookie Sport Mod driver Brent Curran headed into Ocean Speedway’s Pat & Jim Pettit Shootout with some uncertainty after only racing once in the previous month. That uncertainty quickly went away, as Curran had his best weekend as a Sport Mod driver yet.

 

Friday didn’t start well for Curran, who’s poor heat race landed him in a B main. With his car not taking well to the wet and heavy surface, Curran was unsure if he’d even be able to transfer to the main. Luckily, the team made the right adjustments, and Curran was just able to squeak in to the last transfer spot.

 

By virtue of being the last car in, Curran would have to line up in 24th out of the 24 car field, with plenty of work to do to salvage a decent finish. With a few minor tweaks, the car was much better for the main event. That, along with a few breaks along the way helped Curran climb all the way up to 12th with a few laps left. In the last 2 laps, Curran was able to pass two cars ahead of him to take home a Top 10 in a race that had very few cautions.

 

Saturday rolled around and from the get-go, you could tell that this night would go much better than the previous.

 

Getting to start on the pole for his heat certainly didn’t hurt. While Chris Falkenberg was able to take the lead on the start, Curran stayed right behind him for all 8 laps, with his 2nd place finish giving him an automatic transfer to the main event.

 

Curran would redraw a 6 for the main event, lining him up on the outside of the third row for the 26 lap feature. It would only take Curran 5 laps to go from 6th to the lead, and he immediately went to work on growing his lead. While he was smooth sailing up front, a challenger was emerging in 18th place starter Kevin Johnson. As the laps clicked off, Johnson drew closer and closer to Curran. Curran sensed this, however, and changed his line take Johnson’s momentum away.

 

Johnson continued to throw everything he had at Curran. Then, after taking the white flag, Johnson appeared to take the lead from Curran, but a caution would nullify the pass. The yellow would lead to one final 2 lap dash to the finish. On the restart, Curran pulled away to an insurmountable lead, and would go on to win the big $1,006 prize, by far the biggest win of his career.

 

Curran had this to say on this huge win: “It’s just so unreal. I’ve asked everyone to pinch me thousands of times and have to go to bed and stare at my check on the wall to convince myself it happened. I just can’t thank my family, friends and sponsors enough for the support and the awesome pep talks before the race. I just can’t believe we went down there and beat the best of the best on a smaller budget than most and it’s just huge for all of us. Never experienced such a huge reaction either.”
