As we head into mid-June, Jesse Bryant is steadily gaining steam in the race for the Placerville Speedway Pure Stock Rookie of the Year award. Over the past two weeks, the 13 year old racer has opened what was a 10 point lead into a 23 point margin, with 8 races left to decide the winner.
In the overall standings, Bryant sits a solid 7th. If it wasn’t for an early season race where he flipped and didn’t start the feature, however, Bryant would be comfortably sitting in the Top 5.
Bryant’s Saturday night started off with heat race action, with the young driver starting last in the 5 car race. Unfortunately for Bryant, he wasn’t able to gain any ground on his fellow competitors, finishing the 8 lap heat in 5th.
For the feature, Bryant would roll off last in the 10 car field. Over the course of the opening few laps, Bryant showed his great awareness by avoiding multiple spinning cars, all the while moving up in the running order.
Bryant wasn’t able to miss them all, however, as he collided with Stephanie Hanson to bring out a Lap 5 caution.
After all the early race carnage was complete, Bryant was all the way up to 6th. Though the rookie driver still hasn’t found the consistent speed to hang with the fastest Pure Stock drivers in the west, the next 15 laps provided a valuable learning experience for Bryant.
This time behind the leaders allowed him to watch exactly how these drivers ran their lines and hopefully picking up important lessons on how to tackle the tricky Placerville Speedway. When all was said and done, Bryant came home with a stellar 6th place finish, establishing a new season high for himself.
Jesse will return to action June 22nd at Placerville Speedway.
